Emily’s Story

Emily wasn’t sure which career path to take after university, but with an Apprenticeship, she found a role she could be proud of.

“My advice to anyone thinking of doing an Apprenticeship is, do it, because it’s really good life experience and it gets you ahead in a working environment.”

Subjects studied: Level 2 Business and Administration Apprenticeship

Former school: Richard Lander School, Truro

What’s next: To continue working at the College as the Exams Officer

My story:

Emily’s journey with Truro and Penwith College has taken her from an Apprentice to Exams Assistant and now to the Exams Officer, a middle management position she never thought she would get. After completing her degree in Photography Emily decided she wanted to pursue a different career and completed an Apprenticeship at the College, giving her the confidence to apply for bigger roles.

Emily said: “I wanted to try and do something academic again and gain more skills to get me into the workplace. I was still in a college environment, but also felt really professional and was getting paid to learn.

“I think the biggest thing for me was feeling like an actual member of staff and feeling like a really valued employee. I was still just learning how to do things, but I was given a lot of responsibility. It felt good to take ownership at such an early stage.

“I never really knew what I wanted to do as a career, but it’s something that I feel I am good at, and I’ve never really felt like that before. The Apprenticeship made me feel like I now know what I’m doing.

“Getting the administration qualification really helped. Admin experience was something that my employers were definitely looking for. Having that experience was really beneficial.

“My advice to anyone thinking of doing an Apprenticeship is, do it, because it’s really good life experience and it gets you ahead in a working environment.”
