what will I learn?

The course provides an opportunity for those who have an interest in the visual arts to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from further to higher education. The Art and Design Level 3 Extended Diploma offers a fantastic opportunity for you to explore a range of exciting creative techniques and processes.

This course is aimed primarily at those who have recently completed their secondary education and is a practically based programme that covers a broad range of Art and Design subjects. The qualification has been written with the support of University of the Arts London Institutions including Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design, Chelsea College of Art and Design, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Art.

The course will prepare you with the skills and creative thinking these institutions and other HE institutions require for their undergraduate courses. The course will give you the knowledge, skills and understanding to explore, develop and test your creativity in areas such as fine art, graphics, 3D, textile processes, ceramics, printmaking, drawing, mixed media image creation, specialist design software, contextual studies and photography.

where will it take me?

For any career in art and design it is recommended that you go into Higher Education to do a specialist degree or foundation degree. Your portfolio of work is designed to get you accepted on to a course in Higher Education such as a BA (Hons) or a foundation diploma in Art and Design.

We offer a one-year Foundation Diploma in Art and Design and a two-year HND in Art Practice (Fine Art and Contemporary Crafts) at the University Centre Truro and Penwith. Many of our alumni have progressed into careers such as print and textile design, animation, designer-makers and design crafts such as ceramics or jewellery and silversmithing, graphic design, fashion design, illustration and commercial photography.

assessment arrangements

Each unit has interim assessment points and a final assessment, which is pass/fail. Your final unit in each year is graded pass, merit, distinction and this will be your yearly grade if all units are successfully completed. There are no exams on the main award; it is all assessed on practical work.

Entry Requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include either English Language or Literature and/or Maths. A merit on a relevant level 2 diploma can also be considered.

In addition to general entry requirements for L3 Diploma courses, a keen interest in drawing to develop your creativity, as a design stimulus and as a means of gathering creative ideas and making them visible is absolutely essential.

Information & Support

Independent practice will be supported through PowerPoints, worksheets and other guides available through our Moodle course. College trips to visit museums and galleries will be offered and we encourage our students to visit galleries both locally and nationally to support their work.
