Alfie Brown from Penwith College in Penzance has been awarded the prestigious BTEC Award for Child, Health and Social Care Learner of the Year 2022.
Alfie’s inspiring achievements stood out among an international field of candidates and wowed the judges, whose collective breath was taken away by his drive to become a paramedic. In a short space of time, he has managed to gain an enormous amount of challenging practical work under his belt, becoming a qualified RNLI lifeguard and COVID vaccination advocate. This invaluable experience has made him confident, authoritative and – above all – calm under pressure; all crucial life skills for anyone wanting to go into paramedicine, and ones which he as has been impressively diligent at sharing with the rest of his class.
Alfie Brown, Child, Health and Social Care Learner of the Year, said: “I can’t believe I have won this award. I am so grateful to all of my family and my teaching staff for their amazing support. I feel really proud of myself for following the goal I have always wanted to achieve – even though at times it felt difficult to try new things, I persevered, and I am so happy that I got into university to finally study to be a Paramedic.”
Freya Thomas Monk, Senior Vice President for Vocational Qualifications and Training at Pearson, said: “After two long years spent giving or receiving lessons behind a computer screen, through face masks, or socially distanced, 2022 has been a whirlwind for everyone involved in education. Considering this, it makes the inspiring achievements documented in Alfie’s submission all the more impressive. The hard work and commitment he – and all our winners – demonstrated is extraordinary, and I am proud we were able to recognise them all through these year’s set of Awards.”
Katie Maggs, Deputy Team Leader at Penwith College said, “This award means so much to all the staff, students, and parents. Alfie is just one of a multitude of success stories we have here each year at Truro and Penwith College. Students go on to study such an incredible array of degree courses such as adult nursing, midwifery, social work, paramedic science, physiotherapy, and operating department practitioners – all at top universities nationwide or through apprenticeship programmes. Gaining beneficial practical skills in diverse and varied work placements also support the students within their higher education, employment positions and their university personal statements.”
Twenty award winners won prizes in categories including Health and Social Care, Engineering, Music, Esports and Creative Media, each selected from thousands – and often tens of thousands – of eligible students.
