Alumni Dan studied A Level Geography, Psychology, History and Sociology A Level during his time as a student at Truro and Penwith College, before heading to the University of Reading to study History. Dan explained: “I enjoyed History the most and ended up doing a degree in History.

“I studied at the University of Reading for three years and then worked there for two years. Since then, I have moved to SOAS, and I’ve worked here for three years.”

Dan now works as a Student Recruitment Manager at SOAS, a specialist University in London.

Dan said: “SOAS is a specialist University that specialises in the study of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. That comes from our Humanities, Social Sciences and Language programmes. We’re quite unique in what we do but it’s a fantastic opportunity for students who are interested in exploring those areas of the world.”

Reflecting on his time at Truro and Penwith College, Dan says: “I had such a great experience at Truro, and it feels like a mini university! I really enjoyed that environment and that community.

“I had some really amazing lecturers, my time at Truro College really solidified to me that I wanted to go to university. My lecturers were all very supportive and helped to identify different university options that I might be interested in.”

Dan’s advice for future students is to consider all your options: “At the start it can be quite hard to know what you want to do, there are so many different options out there. But that’s okay, it means there are lots of opportunities for you.

“It’s worth spending a little bit of time researching those opportunities. Have a read through different degrees and pathways and if something stands out to you, maybe look into it further.”

He also praises the Careers support available at the College: “There is a lot of support available, speaking to your Careers Team at College is one of the best things you can do if you have a goal or idea of where you want to go. They can help you make your dreams come true.”
