In a vibrant celebration of creativity and talent, students from the University Centre Truro & Penwith showcased their work at a series of art, design and photography exhibitions throughout May.
Students from the full range of Higer Education and Access to Higher Education courses took over locations such as the Art Centre Penryn (formerly Grays Wharf Studios) and Lemon Quay Piazza in Truro, offering many students a platform to present their artistic achievements to the public for the very first time.
The exhibitions demonstrated the diverse range of skills nurtured within the University Centre’s huge range of creative courses including; BA (Hons) Craft & Design, BA (Hons) and FdA Silversmithing & Jewellery, HND and HNC Fine Art, BA (Hons) Applied Media, FdA Film, Media and Photography, Access to Creative Media and Photography, Access to Creative Arts and Access to Art & Design.
Exhibition attendees had the opportunity to experience an eclectic mix of media, including photography, video installations, fashion design and interactive art pieces.
The Art Centre Penryn provided an intimate setting for the BA (Hons) Applied Media cohort, serving as a home to their exhibition, FOUR, which ran from Tuesday 21 – Saturday 25 May. The work on show was heavily influenced by the rise of AI (artificial intelligence) and its threat to creative practice. The students demonstrated the range of creativity and media skills they have learned through the three years of study at the University Centre Truro & Penwith, developing concepts and ideas that will be key for creative businesses throughout Cornwall.
One of the exhibitors, Claud Cooper, a third-year BA (Hons) Applied Media student, expressed his views on the significance of the exhibitions: “I wanted to showcase everything I’ve learned and created over the last three years of university. I have three photos I did in the first year of the course to showcase my photography side and I also made an introspective conversation video between myself and another version of myself, talking about my past and what brought me to be the creative I am today. As a tactile installation element, I have got six t-shirts that I designed and four pairs of shoes I painted to tie in with what I want to do after university, hopefully to exemplify and showcase that as my chosen career path.”
After finishing his degree, Claud hopes to continue establishing his own clothing brand.
Lemon Quay Piazza was home to the ‘Making your Mark’ exhibition, a five-day Art & Design showcase with an aim to promote creativity and raise funds for a local mental health charity, held in the heart of Truro, Cornwall’s bustling city. FdA and BA (Hons) Silversmithing & Jewellery and Access to Art & Design students made up part of the large cohort of students whose creative endeavours filled the huge 51-metre marquee.
Millie Moores, BA (Hons) Silversmithing and Jewellery student, won the Guild of Ten Emerging Maker award, presented at the exhibition’s private viewing on 22 May. Millie was one of several prize winners during the evening.
Access to Creative Media and Photography students also held a showcase at the College, exhibiting their final major project work. Titled ‘Eclectic’, the exhibition featured a variety of photography genres, graphic design work and moving image products based on a theme of the students’ choice. Britt Duff, Media & Photography lecturer, expressed her praise for the students’ achievements: “It’s always so wonderful to see the creative work that Access students produce at the end of the year. They have all worked so hard and should be very proud of what they have accomplished.”
The exhibitions not only highlighted the remarkable talents of these emerging artists but also emphasised the importance of Higher Education in providing a foundation for creative exploration and professional development. The events were well-received by the public, with many attendees expressing admiration for the students’ creativity, technical skills, and the thought-provoking nature of their works.
