frequently asked questions

An Apprentice is a full-time employee within your business and is entitled to the same staff benefits of all other employees.

The length of the contract of employment will need to match the length of the Apprenticeship programme. The length of each programme can be found on our Apprenticeship Training Programmes.

Providing you conform to the National Minimum Wage, you are free to set the rate of pay for your Apprentices.

It is very important to pay an appropriate wage for the job you expect the Apprentice to perform and a rate that is competitive amongst employers recruiting Apprentices in your sector. See who is recruiting on our Apprenticeship Jobs page.

Apprentices need to work a total of 30 hours a week to complete their Apprenticeship (this includes the time they spend at College). When your Apprentice attends College can vary by programme, but they will typically spend 20% of their time in the classroom. For some programmes this is one day every two weeks and for others there can be a block of training to help them acquire the basic skills before entering the workplace.
